The DVD is dead! Well so we're told anyhow. You may have seen adverts here there and everywhere, for either Netflix, or and also LoveFilm - two separate companies offering streaming of films, TV series and programmes to your TV through your Playstation, or a nearby device.
So, what should you consider before taking advantage of one of these packages, often in fact seen on Groupon?
Connection
Of course this is an Internet streaming service, which means you have to have a fast enough Internet connection to stream comfortably - so unless you have a decent link to the Internet you'll spend most of your time waiting for these movies, or TV programmes to buffer. This of course is extremely irritating and just means either Netflix, or LoveFilm isn't really worth the hassle.
Connection
Obviously you need a certain sort of setup to connect either of these services to your TV. Of course it's possible to link to them on your PC quite easily. However, to play on your TV screen, you will need either an Internet enabled TV, which has a relevant app from either company. Of course the PS3 is also a great addition and allows linking to the mediums via its online service. The PS3 also bundles up as a great addition for gaming and considering its low price nowadays makes a worthy investment.
Thirdly it is also possible to link to your great Netflix, or LoveFilm deal via a PC once you have a Wi-Fi connection for your TV. If your TV is a little older a VGA , or S-Video cable can be used to stream from a laptop or some such sort of device to your TV.
Resolution
The resolution of the programmes and movies on Netflix and LoveFilm can be chosen though the higher the resolution the more streaming bandwidth and the faster the connection speed needed. Of course HD movies are the perfect replacement for BluRay disks, though do ensure your TV is Full HD - though if you're watching these mediums we expect it to be.
Where to get the Services?
Both NetFlix and LoveFilm obviously have web sites, however daily deals sites such as Groupon.co.uk and others often provide great value packages for very low costs. These packages allow you the service for a small price with the option of leaving after however many months you pay for. This means that in most cases there is no minimum contract and you can leave the services as you require.
Issues
As both these services are relatively new in the UK and Ireland, they don't have a very large collection of footage on offer. Well relative to your DVD shop, or online stores such as Amazon. However, they still have thousands of hours of great quality streaming on offer, meaning you're sure to find most of what you want. Of course in time the libraries will grow significantly and we expect to see large amounts of footage on these services and for them to truly replace other physical mediums.
Advantages
Of course, we've been banging on about NetFlix and LoveFilm for a while now, however what advantages do they offer. Well, content on demand is one. Instead of waiting for your film, or TV programme, you can just watch it when you want.
Aside from this you can watch it as many times as you want and don't have to return it. There's also no looking after of DVDs, or BluRay disks which also eases the burden of the whole thing.
In comparison to illegal downloads (which look like they may soon be scarce anyhow) Netflix and LoveFilm give you good quality, when you expect it and are also completely legal meaning all royalties go to the film.
So, have a look on daily deals sites such as Groupon Groupon deals and get yourself a deal for NetFlix, or LoveFilm today.
